Hampshire FA U18 Girls Cup
Saturday’s Hampshire Cup Semi-Final was a performance defined by resilience, grit, and an incredible "playing up" mentality. Facing the Hampshire Girls Youth Football League Division 1 leaders, Millbrook, after a few weeks without competitive action, our girls proved that age is just a number. This was a side comprised almost entirely of U16s playing up to the U18 level, supported by only three U17 players.
The girls started with incredible intent, rattling both the crossbar and the post in the opening minutes. On another day, the girls could have been 2-0 up; instead, the fine margins of cup football went against them. Millbrook showed why they sit at the top of the table, capitalising on a few errors and a baffling penalty decision to slot home three goals in a 20-minute blitz. After a fourth goal went in, a tactical shift and formation change settled the nerves, allowing the girls to stabilise the game heading into the break at 0-4.
The challenge grew even steeper at the interval. One of our three U17 players was forced off with an injury sustained on the stroke of half-time. With no further substitutes, the team was forced to play the entire second half with only 10 players.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the second half belonged to the girls. The football was fluid, the energy was high, and the girls looked the better side for long stretches. After hitting the woodwork several more times and seeing the Millbrook keeper pull off a string of fine saves, the breakthrough finally came. A clinical finish from the right wing saw the ball driven low past the keeper into the far corner to make it 1-4.
Even with further niggling injuries forcing players into unfamiliar positions, the group refused to quit. With 10 minutes remaining, a 20-yard free kick rattled the underside of the bar and appeared to cross the line—only for the official to wave play on. Had that stood at 2-4, the momentum might have shifted entirely. As it was, the match ended 4-1, but the scoreline tells only half the story of a team that refused to be intimidated by older or more numerous opposition.
POTM: Georgia. A phenomenal performance at the back and in a CDM role. Georgia kept the team believing and led by example throughout the 90 minutes.
