Hampshire FA U12 Girls Cup
Today our U11 Performance team faced their toughest test of the season as they took on AFC Bournemouth U12 in the Hampshire FA County Cup. Facing a JPL Premier Division side is always a significant challenge, but with only nine players available and no substitutes, the girls had a massive mountain to climb.
At the start of the match, the focus was placed entirely on the quality of performance rather than the scoreline. The girls started brilliantly, dealing with Bournemouth’s relentless pressing with composure. While we struggled to maintain long periods of possession, our sheer hard work kept the game scoreless for much of the first half. Ruby was a rock in goal, making several key saves, and it ultimately took two incredibly powerful, well-placed strikes for Bournemouth to finally break through and take a 2-0 lead.
Bournemouth’s movement off the ball was exceptional, constantly finding pockets of space that forced us to work tirelessly on the defensive end. We knew that even a split second of lost concentration would be punished, and the girls did a fantastic job of staying switched on under immense pressure.
The second half proved to be a much more balanced affair. We continued to battle at the back and looked increasingly settled as the game progressed. Our possession improved significantly, and we became far more threatening in the final third through aggressive hassling, clever passing, and direct runs down the wing. It took Bournemouth another twenty minutes to find their third and final goal—another unstoppable strike that left the keeper with no chance.
We couldn't be prouder of the team today. To hold our own for the entire game against what is likely the best side we will face this season—all without the luxury of substitutes—is a testament to their fitness and heart. They should be incredibly proud of themselves.
The Player of the Match award was shared today between two very deserving players. Firstly, Ruby, who stepped up despite not normally playing in goal, putting in a fantastic first-half shift with vital saves before moving upfront to create several chances for her teammates. She was joined by Lily, who was an absolute powerhouse on the right wing. Lily combined dangerous attacking runs with a relentless defensive work rate, making several key interceptions that kept us in the contest. Well done to both!
